THE tech giant Google and the Public Interest News Foundation have been instrumental in supporting Llanelli Online CIC in establishing and continuing the provision of hyperlocal news online via a talking newspaper and an online radio station.

Editor of Llanelli Online and Wales News Online, Alan Evans had been building the hyperlocal news service but hit a wall when the Coronavirus pandemic struck.

Speaking to Lewis Rhys Jones of Llanelli Talk Radio Alan said: “The Cornonavirus was something none of us foresaw. The impact has been felt worldwide. At a local level we struggled to get advertisers as businesses closed down. We knew we had to continue the service more than ever with the volume of information in demand from the general public. We saw that Google and PINF were calling for applications so we put our forms in. Thankfully they approved our funding and we were able to retain staff and upgrade our systems in order to provide a better service.”

Llanelli Talk Radio will now provide a scheduled broadcast daily, which will include a news bulletin, music, interviews and a Welsh lesson. There are plans to launch the Talking Newspaper for Wales within the next few months. It certainly has been a busy time at the production studios and office of Llanelli Online CIC.
